Follow the River
Follow the River derives its inspiration from the Agusan river.
In the land of my mother Is a river that knows its way Through the heart strings of its daughters From the womb’s mouth to the sea In my travels, I’ve kissed solitude In the twin face of man and street In the land of my mother A roar welcomes me with a beat I’ll follow the river I’ll follow the river All my friendships are stones and feathers That reach my ground with savage grace All the names of my future daughters Will rhyme with rivers that cross my face I’ll follow the river I’ll follow the river
Tu Pasak Ta
Tu Pasak Ta is a Manobo phrase which means “our land.” Driven by proverty and the lack or absence of incentive, farmers oftentimes have to desert their lands to find more lucrative means of livelihood.
Awitin natin ang danguyngoy ng yuta Isayaw seereng kasub-anan Tu pasak ta Pinalambo sa dugo ng ninuno Binisbisan ng pag-asa at kakugi Ang yuta, and naulila Ang iniwan ng tag-iya Kayong nabulahan Ang yuta iniwanan Pukawa ang mag-uumang Sa lungsod namulawan Saan datoy nga magatang Dili mabayloan Tu pasak ta Ang yuta, iti biyag tayo And katungud, ining duta
Where?
My time is dressed I shall be leaving soon To bid farewell to all our cares Don’t ask me where I’m going It doesn’t matter anymore But I have a feeling I will be happy there Those blue mountains And this tangerine sky I shall keep them in my bag My bagful of memories Shall hear you play your song And keep me company In my journey there Where? Where is the edge? Where is the edge of my time? That I have promised to myself A place within myself Where no one can reach me Where?
Ay, Nukleyar
The Bataan Nuclear Plant is an expensive way for poor Filipinos to die. This song is against its whole concept and operation.
Hot-air Balloon Nation
This song was written after the 1989 coup d’etat. Balloon here symbolizes two things: political violence and the innocence of its victims.
I hear you baby, pleading You want a hot-air balloon I see you baby, playing With a hot-air balloon Hot-air balloon nation I know of men In three-piece suits Invading headlines Machine-gun punchlines They’ll fire their way to history In the game of the hot-air balloon Hot-air balloon nation The streets are lined with armour And bullets race the sky Get down, run for cover And don’t you ask me why Hot-air balloon nation
Lawang Sebu
This song is about Lake Sebu, ancestral home of the T’bolis in Cotabato, and the biggest gold deposit in the Philippines.
This House
Father, Your house is split like timber A crackling, kindling summer Locusts in open fire Mother Sweep up the shards of anger Serve me a room with view And sympathetic stew In this house Of cold hungry beds And shipwrecked vows Are you here with me Tomorrow When I wake Daughter Your thigh is grazed from fences The barbed wire of cages When lullabies don’t rest Lovers The moon sails full at sea Cast dreams and stones to see What future gives for free
Padayon
Padayon in Visaya “means continue”,”move on”
Padayon, padayon lamang Ang higayon, musubang karon Padayon, ug panlimbasug Ang panahon, anaa sa imong kamot Kung ang imong kusug nahinanok Pagpahulay, hinay-hinay Padayon, dawat ug gasa Ipaambit sa tanan Padayon, ug isaulog Kining lakaw sa kinabuhi Ug kung ikaw nagmasulub-on Hinumdumi kung dunay adlaw Adunay pagdag-um Padayon, magmadasigon Ang imong pangandoy Makab-ot karon Padayon, magmalaumon Ang imong gipaabot Mahimugso karon Ay yay yay yay …
Kamingaw
Kamingaw in Visayan means “I feel melancholic.”
Sukad sa imong pagbiya Dili mahimutang Sukad sa imong paglakaw Ang bulak nangalaya Kanunay hawan ang tugkaran Walay kalingawan Ang buntag, gabi-i ug hapon Walay kalipayan Kamingaw Sa adlaw Ang hangin walay duyog Ang kaguol, kahidlaw Ang hangin nagabakhu Kamingaw Kanus-a magkauban usab Masud-ong ang pahiyom Ako, walay laing tinguha Kung dili ang ikaw makita
